BCM: Varsity Match 2013 by Franklin on IM Panjwani,R(CAN) Game

IM Panjwani is featured in the BCM.

131st Varsity Match-Oxford-v-Cambridge
by Samuel Franklin

‘My first experience of the Varsity Match was a somewhat mixed affair. On the one hand, it felt special being part of a tradition that dates back to 1873. The conditions were good and somehow it didn’t seem at all unnatural bringing a suit and black tie to a chess event.

Moreover, the right university won in the end. On the other hand, I lost my game and for the second time found myself on the wrong side of a best game prize. (more)[Annotated game in article]’

Here is the game with my annotations as previously published on this blog.

Both sides are pressing each other. How should black continue?

Position 2
Black lost on time on move 30.Bd4 but continuing the line I arrived at this position on 33.Bxe5 after a queen sacrifice. White has strong pressure and black has a hard time finding the correct defensive move.

BC Open Richmond 2013 Rd5-Pechisker,A

This game was played at the recent BC Open and pitted a rising star-Jason Cao against a veteran master, Alfred Pechisker who came second with 4.5/5. Young Jason Cao,himself a master, finished with a respectable 3/5 but for a master this is a disappointing result.

Jason first burst into prominence by winning the World Under 10 Championships in 2010.
